Dress your dog for extreme cold (and cuteness)!

Even though the normal body temperature of dogs is higher (101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit) than that of humans, this does not mean they are able to withstand extreme cold temperatures. Yes, certain breeds such as Great Pyrenees for example may tolerate and even enjoy colder temperatures (up to an extent), but this does not mean that we do not need to take care to bring most dogs in during colder days and nights. It is also helpful to have on hand for those very chilly days a few items that will make your dog more comfortable including a jacket (one that is easy to put on and take off is best), and booties (also best to get those that are easy to put on and take off but don't come off on their own). Of course it is also best to get your dog used to these BEFORE you actually need them. So, do some training ahead of time while the weather is still warm. Try putting one bootie on at a time and just keep it on for a very short while before taking it off and letting your dog know s/he did great! You might try putting it on for the first time while your dog is eating so s/he is more focused on the food instead of the new boot. Let's keep our canine companions warm and comfortable even on those extreme cold days. And remember, a dog house is seldom enough when temperatures drop below freezing.
